Post Script to November Issue

Beach Road Magazine has received good feedback from the readers who liked the cover of the November Issue. There were also questions regarding the article that warrant clarification.

In the article titled "Blessings," the writer discusses Ms. Jeanette Gutierrez Rocher's Thanksgiving experience both on and off-island.

Jeanette's first attempt at cooking her Thanksgiving dinner was actually 15 years ago when she moved to Phoenix, Arizona as a flight attendant. It was her first time to be away from home and it was not without problems as she had never tried doing it on her own before that...not to mention she'd encountered problems with a broken oven. (Some readers thought this experience happened only last year.)

Fifteen years down the road, Jeanette is no longer the young lady who had problems with her first Thanksgiving turkey. She'd like to think her cooking's improved at least a little bit since then.

One thing the other readers have been asking if she's single. The answer is "Yes!"

Poster-Making Contest

EAT BETTER.
PLAY HARDER.
LIVE HEALTHIER.
LEARN EASIER.
Wellness is a way of life!

This is the motto on the PSS website under “Food and Nutritional Services” and the theme for the 2010 Saipan Health and Wellness Fair poster contest.

Each student is invited to create a poster that he or she feels best expresses these words.  They should include their full name, age, classroom teacher and school on the back for easy identification.

The pictures must be on 11” x 17” paper and the students may use colored pencils, felt pens, crayons, paint, chalk or watercolors to create their designs.  There will be two age categories; eleven and under and twelve and over.  The paper will be provided by Beach Road Magazine.  We’d like to get an estimate of how many students from each school would like to participate by Thursday, October 14 and we’ll bring paper to the schools on Friday October 15.  Please have the schools email Susan at sales5@glimpsesofguam.com or call 235-7645 or 483-3145 with the number of students interested in participating.

All pictures must be submitted by Friday, November 12.  The pictures will be displayed at the 2010 Health and Wellness Fair.  The judges will be announced in early October.  The top three winners will be featured with their pictures in an upcoming issue of Beach Road Magazine and prizes (to be announced) will be awarded.

Criteria for judging:
  • A panel of judges will choose the winners based on the following: originality (10 points),  content (lives up to the theme) (10 points), and overall impact/appearance (10 points).
  • Each entry will be rated on a scale of 1-10 (with 10 as the highest possible score) per criterion.
  • In the event of a tie, two representatives from Glimpses of Saipan will decide the winner/s.
  • The decision of the panel of judges is final.
  • The results of the competition will be posted online after verification.

2010 Health and Wellness Fair

Glimpses of Saipan and Beach Road Magazine are pleased to announce the 2010 Health and Wellness Fair on Saturday, November 20 from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. at the Civic Center Tennis Court in Susupe.

What are the goals of our Health and Wellness fair?

  • To increase visibility of health and wellness resources within our community
  • To increase personal health awareness among participants
  • To motivate participants to make positive health behavior changes
  • To provide a variety of health screenings and educational materials
  • To provide participants with preventive care information
  • To screen individuals for certain conditions
  • To enroll community members into social service programs

To achieve these goals we’d like information and health screening booths, demonstrations and exhibits, healthy food preparation tips and advice about proper nutrition, diet and exercise, athletes, sports clubs, information on stress reduction, vitamins, massage therapy, preventative care and everything else that promotes healthy living.

We want visitors to this event to have an opportunity to get immediate feedback on health issues, sample nutritious foods and drinks, take home free health-related giveaways and listen to motivated professionals and athletes deliver positive messages.  We want them to come away with an enhanced sense of how to increase their health and improve their lifestyle not only for themselves but also for their families.

Possible demonstrations and activities can include but are not limited to CPR and First Aid, martial-arts, Tai Chi, aerobic dancing, healthy cooking, proper use of exercise equipment, bike safety, massage therapy, self defense, and Q and A with a doctor or health practitioner.

We invite you and your organization to participate in this event. Please call 235-7645 or 483-3145 and look for Susan Marchitti.

Let us work together to educate and raise awareness for a healthier, happier community.
